Visual Discrimination with Word Play

Word Play is a brain boosting printable activity for kids designed primarily to strengthen visual discrimination skills. Visual discrimination helps us differentiate letters and words that appear similar.

For students who struggle with reading, repetition is not always the answer. Word Play takes a fun approach to building not only visual discrimination skills, but multiple foundation skills for better ease of learning. Of course, students don’t have to be struggling readers to enjoy Word Play’s many benefits.

Use Word Play, An Art-for-Brains Activity for early finishers, in literacy centers or as fun homework. It is just as fitting for differentiated classrooms and homeschools as it is for therapeutic educational environments.

Students use patterned alphabet letters for 3 different activities.

In Crack the Pattern Code students uncover hidden uplifting messages using the provided patterned alphabet as a key.

Crack the Secret Word List Code uses the process of elimination, deductive reasoning, and advanced matching skills. Students reveal four hidden words, all with something in common, then identify the theme of the word list.

Finally, students may Create-a-Card using the provided templates. Using the patterned alphabet as a guide they draw the appropriate pattern within each letter on the card, then color and embellish it however they wish. You will find a DIY envelope template to cut, fold, and paste at the end of this activity.
