Are your students facing the "word problem woes?" Mine were, and it prompted me to create this product!
In this resource, students learn how to "dissect" the text of a word problem, in order to figure out the necessary components needed to solve a word problem.
My teammates and I noticed how much our students were struggling with word problems this year, after our district implemented a new math curriculum (Bridges). The trouble wasn't necessarily the math, but rather getting to the math. They kept getting hung up on the text, which hindered them from being able to solve what the question was asking.
After some trial and error, this resource is what I created. My students have begun using this, and the results have been positive!
There is also an optional written component, in which you can engage your students in explaining their math thinking, a very important skill they need to demonstrate on standardized tests. I include instructions, sentence starters, and student samples.
Although this is created using 3rd grade math Common Core standards, you could use it as an enrichment activity for 2nd graders, or a intervention/supplement for 4th grade students. There is an answer key for each section, divided by the various Common Core standards.
It could be used as a stand-alone resource, or as a support piece to another math curriculum.
However you use it, I believe you will find this resource to be a benefit in helping your students overcome word problem struggles!
Thank you for looking!
