Are your students facing the "word problem woes?"
In this resource, students learn how to "dissect" the text of several different word problems, using a variety of operations and strategies, in order to figure out the necessary components needed to solve any tricky word problem.
This resource also includes two posters to help students learn the steps to solving word problems, as well as how to better share their "math thinking."
My teammates and I noticed how much our students were struggling with word problems this year, after our district implemented a new math curriculum (Bridges). The trouble wasn't necessarily the math, but rather getting to the math. They kept getting hung up on the text, which hindered them from being able to solve what the question was asking.
After some trial and error, this resource is what I created. My students have begun using this, and the results have been positive!
There is also an optional written component, in which you can engage your students in explaining their math thinking, a very important skill they need to demonstrate on standardized tests. I include instructions, sentence starters, and student samples.
Although this resource has word problems to meet 4th grade math Common Core standards, you could use it as an enrichment activity for 3rd graders, or a intervention/supplement for 5th grade students. An answer key included.
However you use it, I believe you will find this resource to be a benefit in helping your students overcome word problem struggles!
Thank you for looking!
