You know how every year you get to the choose an operation word problems and you just groan? No matter what you try, those students STILL don't seem to understand! They add when they are supposed to multiply and subtract when they are supposed do add! Well, those groans will end with this bulletin board/graphic organizer set! I've used this for three years in my classroom and finally got around to putting it on TpT.
How do I do it? What magic have I worked? Simple, I've turned the thinking process into a graphic organizer based mainly on pictures, a few strategic questions and those wonderful key words we try so hard to get them to memorize.
How does it work? That's easy too. Through simple graphics, students learn the fundamentals for what makes a word problem fit the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This has worked with my English language learners, my IEP students, and the unmotivated students. In fact, the only students who haven't mastered the art of choosing an operation for word problems are those who refuse to read the problem. (Yep, I've had a few of them, too.)
You'll get the complete bulletin board set, a reproducible for classroom instruction and a few short tips for teaching. Worth every penny! I only wish that I had this set when I first started teaching.
