As teachers, we all know the various steps students can take to solve a word problem. When I was teaching a 3rd grade math class comprised mainly of struggling readers, it was difficult to teach them how to wade through the problem to get to a strategy to start solving it. It was for them that "The Toolkit" was born. By providing picture reminders of the steps to solve the problem plus requiring them to do certain steps first, the students began to get better at problem solving. This file is comprised of classrooms signs and mini signs (for math notebooks) of my "air quote words" and the toolkit. Also included is a lesson plan to teach the students how to use the toolkit. The lesson is designed for group work and contains tags so the students (and you) know which "tool" they are.
