Product Description
Here are 33 pages of word problems, grouped by Problem Type/Situation and by the position of the Unknown. This makes it possible to make sure you are giving your students the opportunity to solve word problems presented with all possible arrangements of information. Most pages have 3 problems for a total of between 95 and 100 original, non-repetitious word problems.

The Preview File gives examples of the type of problems and the format, which requires students to write all equations they use to solve the problem. There is also an index so you easily find particular problem types. These are all original problems. These are all whole number problems.

These problems are intended for students in Grades 3-4, though many would also be appropriate for fifth graders. I have a similar set of problems for 4th and 5th graders.

The Problem Types and Situations are listed in tables on pp. 88-89 of the Mathematics CCSS. A copy of these tables is included.

If you’re not familiar with the possible variations in “position of the Unknown...”, here’s an example. Here are three variations on the same problem. The only difference is the Unknown – what piece of information we’re missing.

1. There are 4 rows of desks in Mrs. Ellis’ room, with 8 desks in each row. (Total is unknown)

2. There are 4 rows of desks in Mrs. Ellis’ room, and a total of 32 desks (Group size is unknown)

3. Mrs. Ellis has 32 desks in her classroom, with rows of 8. (Number of groups is unknown)
