Product Description
My first grade students would often rush to complete story problems without understanding them first. If we were in an addition chapter, they would find the numbers and add. If we were in a subtraction chapter, they would automatically subtract. These lessons teach students to listen for important words that can help them decide whether to add or subtract.

This workbook was created for students who are learning the vocabulary they will encounter in word problems. Along with basic vocabulary, students learn about three basic types of problems: joining vs. separating, comparing vs. combining, and looking for a part vs. whole. Students enjoy “acting out” the rules they need to follow when deciding to add or subtract.

Includes:
★ Student Booklet Cover
★ 2 Introductory Lessons on Math Symbols + - =
★ 15 Lessons on Joining and Separating
★ 8 Lessons on Combining and Comparing
★ 5 Lessons on Whole and Part
★ 8 Reviews
★ Visuals and Symbol Flash Cards

✎  Each lesson is presented in model, guided practice, independent practice format.
✎  Step-by-step task analysis is included next to each model.
✎  Easy to use. Print and teach.

Students will be able to:
• Understand vocabulary often found in word problems.
• Listen to word problems and decide to add or subtract.
• Represent a word problem with a quick picture or by filling in boxes.
• Write an equation and solve for the answer.

Note: This product does NOT include detailed scripted lesson plans—only the short and simple lessons as shown in the preview. Please look at the preview carefully and ask me any questions you have before you buy.

Our students with learning difficulties need consistency. It can be frustrating as a teacher when you are piecing together and adapting materials from different programs while students are moved quickly from one intervention to the next. I needed math lessons that would get my students smoothly from point A to point B, taking small sequential steps along the way.

These materials were created to align with what is taught in general education classrooms and link directly to the standards (required for IEP goals), yet they are adapted to be explicit, systematic, and chunked into small objectives. Many practice repetitions are needed to master a skill. These workbooks provide that practice in an easy-to-teach format.

Each workbook can be used individually as a stand-alone intervention for that skill or they can be used together, taking students from the basics of addition and place value in first grade all the way to long division in fourth grade. These materials can also be used with older students to help fill the gaps in their learning. No grade levels are printed on workbook pages and clip art is appropriate for all ages.

The design of my math resources is based on research including the findings of this study:
Which Instructional Practices Most Help First-Grade Students With and Without Mathematics Difficulties? published June 25, 2014 in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Educational Research Association.
