Product Description
In this extensive and engaging unit, students will explore the idea of freedom of speech (and censorship) in the past and present United States. By reading and analyzing numerous articles, an image, and two anchor texts, Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" and George Carlin's "Parental Advisory", students will explore and defend opinions about free speech and censorship. In a summative assessment, students will write a speech assuming the voice of Carlin or Henry. This unit was taught as part of a yearlong AP Language Course entitled What Are Words For? It is appropriate for an upper level English class or AP class, as well as class that focuses on debate and rhetoric.
