What is your first move? The most important move in solving a word problem!
This 52 page word problems practice pack is split up into 5 days of work, along with an additional extension activity (and includes all answer keys). The preview can be downloaded so that you can see the pack and read about what each day will include. There is a lot of room, though, for you to adapt this pack to your classroom and what will work best for your students. You can use the cards included for task cards or at centers, you can use the printable worksheets for assessment or for small groups, and you can even decide to do everything as a whole group!
Below is a short explanation of what each day includes, as well:
Day One: Students use the 20 task cards to closely read the word problems and sort them based on which basic operation you would use to solve it. Students do not solve the problems on this day - they simply focus on the basic operations used for solving. A lot of classroom discussion about how we know which operation to use should take place on this day.
Day Two: Students solve the problems from day one (independently or in pairs/groups). Again, students should focus on their basic operations, but now they are also focusing on getting their calculations correct.
Day Three: Students are faced with two step word problems. They need to pick out the different operations used to solve and then solve - showing all work.
Day Four: Students solve two step word problems.
Day Five: Students solve a mixture of one and two step word problems (assessment day).
Day Six: Extension activity - students can create their own one or two step word problem (independently or with a partner/group). Students will fill out their word problem, along with their explanation of how to solve it, on the printable "rough draft" sheet before creating their poster.
