Product Description
I am always looking for new ways to encourage my students to THINK. So often, I give them word problems, and they solve them without really thinking about the information being given and the question that needs to be answered. They are so quick to find the answer, they often do not consider the context. My hope is to slow them down a bit and get them thinking about the problems they are solving, instead of rushing to an answer.

There are two types of problems/tasks included:

- 20 “What’s Missing?” Tasks: These tasks are word problems that are missing the information that is needed to solve them. To put it simply, they are missing the numbers or data. To solve these, students first need to understand what is missing, in order to know how to solve the problem. Then students can input their own information and solve! {These are 2 pages each, meant to be copied back to back}

- 10 “Pose a Question” Tasks: These problems present students with an equation, chart, line plot, or geometric figure, and require students to write and solve their own word problems. {These are single pages}

With Common Core, there is more emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, and student-centered learning. It is my hope that these tasks will help my students to understand the context of the questions they are solving, while using that understanding to fill in the necessary information, or to pose appropriate questions.

Additionally, these tasks take students away from the “one answer fits all” type of problem. These problems are also great for differentiation. Students can input missing information and pose questions at their own comfort level, simplifying problems when necessary, or challenging themselves as they see fit.

I hope that you and your students enjoy these problems as much as my students and I do!
