Description
This first page of this unit includes a a study guide in the form of a flow chart that's easy for students to use. It has clue words and example problems for each operation (add, subtract, multiply, & divide), as well as great general tips for solving any word problem!
The next 8 pages include 2 different quizzes with answer keys. Each quiz has 20 questions and a bonus where they can write their own word problem. On the first quiz, students write the operation that would be used to solve the word problem and also highlight the clue words that helped them find their answer. On the second quiz, students write the equation that would be used to solve the word problem, answer it, and highlight the clue words that helped them arrive at their answer.
The quiz portion of this document was made using the Dyslexia font to help students with dyslexia read better.
I use this unit to introduce word problems at the beginning of the year. Students keep the study guide in their binder all year to refer to. I use the quizzes weekly to test their understanding, group students in math, and reteach specific skills to certain students. The 2 quizzes can be used as either a formative or summative assessment.
