### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

These are word problems using measurements of common things recognizable to second graders. Problems include Missing addend or “Put together/Take apart,” Add to, and Comparison problems, so most of them require students to either count on or subtract to solve.

Students use a number line to identify and color the separate lengths (or addends), and then write both the addition and subtraction equations. Both addition and subtraction are modeled using the number line as shown in the thumbnail illustration.

Problems progress from students’ coloring the number line and writing the equations above and below it, to labeling the number line, and eventually to drawing their own and labeling it appropriately. A couple of pages of exercises in drawing and using number lines are included.

The range of numbers is within 200 but requires students to regroup Ones and Tens only – not Tens to Hundreds.

Common Core Standards:

2.MD.5: “Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units...”

2.OA.1: “Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing...”
