In third grade, mathematically proficient students know that doing mathematics involves solving problems and discussing how they solved them. Students need practice to explain to themselves the meaning of a problem and look for ways to solve it.
These task cards were developed to give the students in my own classroom practice in developing critical thinking skills and problem-solving strategies when faced with a word problem. Students will have practice with a variety of addition and subtraction situations where the results are unknown, change is unknown, and or the start is unknown.
Bridging the gap between the on and above grade-level reader and the student who struggles in reading, especially in math, is always a challenge when word problems are involved. These task cards will allow all levels of students to have practice and build success when solving real-world situations in word problems.
This set of cards focuses on word problems that deal with lengths, both standard and metric. There are 18 Practice Problem Task Cards that can be used in a small group or with paired students to discuss and solve. The 12 Challenge Problem Task Cards are used in a center to challenge students to dig deeper.
I have included two example posters for possible solutions. Also included is a Recording Sheet and two Answer Keys for all problems.
