Why labels?I started using labels in my classroom for word problems in our math notebook at the beginning of the year for a few reasons.

1) Primary students write really slow!
2) Primary students write pretty sloppily.
3) When I tried gluing the problems, the pages got stuck together!

Labels fixed all of the above. It also helped to have them pre-made so I didn't have to think of new problems all the time.

I would use these non-thematic word problems as a way to introduce the types of problems and the strategies to figure them out. Then, I would make some more of the same type of problem integrating content and the experiences of your students. These problems mostly deal with sums to 10 and a few sums to 12 and 13. Once students are successful within 10, move to within 20 if in first grade.

Teaching the different types of word problems ( Join, Separate, Part-Part Whole and Comparison) meets CCSS: K.OA.2, 1.OA.1
