A collection of story problems following the narrative of The Hobbit. This collection includes the events recounted in Chapters 1-7 in the book, which roughly corresponds to Part 1 of the movie released in December, 2012.
There are problems requiring all 4 whole-number operations including 2- and 3-digit numbers…problems requiring students to read and use tables and graphs…multistep problems…”interpret the remainder” problems, distributive property problems, problems with extraneous information, and so on.
These are best suited to 4th through 6th grade students. A good reader can follow the narrative without having read the book or seen the movie, but I suggest that you read the problems through as a group to make sure students understand them. I make calculators available to students.
A table containing solutions and notes on the problems is included at the end.
Common Core Standards:
3.OA.3: “Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities...”
3.OA.5: “Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide…”
3.MD.3: “Solve one- and two-step problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.”
4.OA.3: “Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted…”
4.MD.2: “Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances…”
A Smart Notebook 10 file is included. Double-click on the .zip icon and you can open both the PDF and Notebook files separately.
