This word problem set involves solving problems based on ages of individuals. There are 10 problems of increasing difficulty with full written out solution keys. I have students use a grid method for organizing the information that is demonstrated in the answer key. These problems involve learning how to describe the relationships with one variables. Direct elimination or substitution is not required, though in essence students use the concept of substitution to solve. One method for use could be to demonstrate 5 problems in class and have the students solve the remaining 5 for homework. In a 45 minute block, I often introduce 2 types of word problems at a time. If your students are just beginning to solve word problems, I have a free graphic organizer that might help.
