Add ‘Em Up 2-Variable Word Problems to Equations
This product gets students working and thinking together. Students work in groups of 2-4. The students work on word problems and related questions and add their answers together to arrive at a sum. The sum is compared to an answer key, and, if the answers match, the students know their answers are correct. If the sums do not match, the students go back and check each other’s work to find the error(s). This is especially where collaborative work and math talk take place.
This product has 5 sheets each with 4 task cards for a total of 20 different task cards. Each task card starts with a word problem and asks the students for variables to use, to write the related equation, and to calculate an answer related to the word problem. The equations representing the word problems are 2-variable linear equations.
Every sheet of task cards has a way for the students to check their answers. The answers to the questions of the four word problems are added together and should match a given sum on the teacher’s answer key. If the sums do not match, the students go back to their desks and find their mistake(s).
The groups could do from one to five task card sheets over one or more day(s). Different groups may be working on different sets of task cards at the same time, as there are 5 different sets. The sets are identified by symbols (hearts, moons, stars, shamrocks, and diamonds).
An answer key is provided.
