This is a packet of five pairs of challenging word puzzles. They focus as much on logic and spatial reasoning as they do on vocabulary. This is an ideal activity for keeping students engaged in academic content that does not require an accompanying lesson plan. I developed this suite of packets specifically for use after the year's tests are completed; we have several generic math and science themed worksheets but very few English activities. This is ideal for keeping students engaged either after school or during summer break.
If approached with teacher supervision: each puzzle is an opportunity to analyze and discuss metacognitive skills. Most of them emphasize nonlinear thinking; you can approach components in different orders, and through elimination you can slowly solve the most difficult problems. If you are even moderately experienced with playing Scrabble, then it may be surprising what syntactical rules you take for granted that help make sense of common letter patterns.
The vocabulary level is medium (AWOKEN, ELITE, RAGGED), but the puzzles range in difficulty. These are appropriate for middle school and high school students, and some may even stump adults. There is a similar packet available for younger ages.
