Work on reading words at a student's level while also playing a fun, fast-paced partner card game! After learning to play, students will beg to play this game during down time!
Word SLAM! has a total of 40 numbered cards each containing a different word. The cards are numbered 1-10 (4 of each number). The numbers are there simply to easily organize the cards to play the game. The words on the cards are to be read whenever the card is played, therefore giving students practice reading and becoming more fluent when blending/ decoding words. Although the directions may seem difficult for young children to comprehend, all of my 1st -4th grade students have understood after a quick example session with me talking through the directions while playing against a student and talking them through the thinking process used during the game.
Another game that can be played with the same cards is word "war". Split the deck in half between two players. Each player has a stack of cards they don't look at. Both throw down the top card from their deck and read the word. The person with the higher numbered card gets both played cards to add to the bottom of his deck. The person with all the cards at the end wins. This is a good option for younger students or for when you have a shorter period of time to play. Happy reading!
