My students really needed some extra practice with identifying special sounds in their spelling words. A word sort is a quick and easy way for them to accomplish this.
I put the headers in my pocket chart and they sort the cards. When they’re done they record their answers on the word sort chart. There is a blank recording chart if you would like this to be a semi-open sort where they come up with their own categories. This sort can also be done as a center activity.
I’ve included everything in color and black and white. Each sort includes its own graphic or list number on all pieces so you can sort the cards if they get mixed up with other word sorts.
This word sort uses the List 20 words from the 3rd Grade A Reason for Spelling curriculum, plus three additional words. You do not need to use this curriculum in order to use the word sort.
