My students really needed some extra practice with identifying special sounds in their spelling words. A word sort is a quick and easy way for them to accomplish this.
I put the headers in my pocket chart and they sort the cards. When they’re done they record their answers on the word sort chart. I only included a blank recording chart since there are nine initial clusters. You can choose to work on 3 at a time or skip the recording sheet and let students make their own. This sort can also be done as a center activity.
I’ve included everything in color and black and white. Each sort includes its own list number on all pieces so you can sort the cards if they get mixed up with other word sorts.
This word sort uses the List 8 words from the 3rd Grade A Reason for Spelling curriculum, plus 102 additional words. I tried to include a variety of extra words; some might be great for expanding vocabulary! You do not need to use this curriculum in order to use the word sort.
