Word Sorts are a great HANDS-ON, efficient and flexible tool that will help your students gain a deeper understanding of how words work instead of relying on rote memorization.
When using a Word Sort as a word work language center, students categorize their words on a Word Sort Map by comparing, contrasting, and focusing their attention on critical features of the words; namely letter patterns, sounds, and meaning. Once they have their words sorted, they may then write their words into their Word Work Journal, onto whiteboards, or even just glue the words onto the word map into the correct category. This is a great and quick assessment for teachers to see if their students are comprehending a topic or idea with little to no prep for the teacher!
When using Word Sort Maps for vocabulary/comprehension sorts, students can categorize words according to a reader's prior knowledge ("Words I know/Words I don't know") or into categories of meaningful groups, depending on what is being taught.
In this FREEBIE, you will get:
* 1 EDITABLE Spelling/Vocabulary word template to type your words onto
* 4 Non-editable Word Sort Maps to be used with almost any type of spelling words.
Just copy the map, have spelling words available to be sorted, and you're ready!
*1 Non-editable Word Sort Map to be used for vocabulary and comprehension words
*3 EDITABLE Word Sort Maps to add your own categories for whatever topic/word
pattern students are studying.
The activities in this FREEBIE packet require you to first choose the weekly spelling words or vocabulary words from the book or unit to be taught, type them into the EDITABLE word box template, and copy it off. You may choose to have your words laminated before cutting them out to be used again in following years. I often preferred to make enough copies for all students, and they are responsible for cutting their own words out. Whichever way works best for you, students will enjoy manipulating, sorting, organizing, and analyzing their words to help fine-tune their higher level thinking skills!
