Word Splash's are a creative way to engage students with new vocabulary words being learned within a text. This activity incorporates a word splash activity into a pre, during, and after reading activity. During the pre-reading activity students are given a vocabulary word and are to find a partner with a similar word. Both students are to then predict the topic of the text and write a statement connecting both vocabulary words to the topic they chose. After the pre-discussion, students will creatively write or place their words onto a poster board to create a word splash to hang within the classroom. As the text is being read, students will complete a during-reading activity where they will raise their hand or sign when they hear or identify a word within the text. Students will then complete a post-reading activity where they will analyze their prediction for accuracy and rewrite a new sentence using a word splash vocabulary word in a new statement based upon knowledge from the text.
