Research has shown that a developed vocabulary, the knowledge and use of many words, is one of the most important indicators of reading success. A proven way to assist students with increasing their understanding and use of words is by teaching Latin and Greek roots. When students learn how to identify the root in a word and know its meaning, they can decipher the definitions of many words that contain the same root. As students become familiar with these patterns or root-word families, their understanding and use of words grow exponentially.
This is a 30 week long course that teaches students Latin and Greek word stems. This course is Common Core Aligned, hitting standards:
RF.4.3a: Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes.
RF.3.3b: Decode words with common Latin suffixes.
RF.5.3a: Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
L.4.4b: Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., telegraph, photograph, autograph).
L.4.4c: Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.
The word lists are in a student friendly graphic organizer. The weekly tests ask students to identify the meaning of the word stem within given vocabulary words, and build on each other to enhance long-term retention and develop pattern recognition.
The bundle is 67 pages of teaching material that includes:
*26 weekly word stems lists
*complete answer keys
*student study tips
*applicable Common Core Standards
