These pages turn traditional spelling tests into an opportunity for students to demonstrate their word study growth. They can be used with any spelling or word study list.
Prepare the pretest page by writing up to ten words in the right hand column before copying - then make your copies and fold the page in half before handing out. Students place their folded paper number side up on a clipboard or tabletop to take the pretest, then turn in pencils for a colored pen and open up the paper to self-correct and record their scores on the top.
Collect student papers and record their pretest score on the data sheet, then hand back to students as a focus for their word study of the week.
Before final assessment day record their names and pretest scores on the assessment page.
On test day hand out their assessment page, give the words and a dictated sentence, then hand out colored pens and display words for students to self-correct. As a final step, have students write how many words they got correct and compare to their pretest score to find the difference, which they mark as their growth on the top of the page.
