This set of seven vocabulary/spelling lists is organized by one or more Greek/Latin roots. These lists were designed and used to introduce students to several common Greek and Latin roots as well as some useful words where they are found.
The worksheets are simple and useful as a whole-group activity (approximately 20-40 minutes per week depending on depth) to discuss the use of Greek/Latin roots in everyday language.
During the several weeks of a Greek and Latin root unit in my class, fourth grade students were responsible for studying the words each week and completing a test on Friday. On Monday, students were given the lists and engaged in collaborative discussions on word meaning. Attached to this folder is a blank template to assess students' ability to spell the word, write the definition, and utilize the word in a sentence.
These lists may be especially useful within your existing word study units, especially if you want to challenge your students or if you are not sure what words to exemplify. These may also be enrichment activities or extension work for your advanced learners.
These lists should be used for grades 4-7, as the definitions are condensed to make them more attainable (but still challenging) to younger students first learning Greek/Latin roots.
This download contains one PDF file with eight pages. Seven are worksheets with the week's root focus (Bio/Graph, Cycle/Scope, Dict/Multi, Heli/Hemi, Log, Ped/Pod, Photo/Geo). The eighth page is a blank assessment worksheet.
