Word Study Method

An effective method for learning words we wished we would have discovered 10 years ago!
Our second graders made careless errors in their reading, ex. was for the word saw, came for come, went for want, etc. This method corrected the problem.
Students choose six words to study. Sight words or words from Words Their Way can be used.
Being in charge of their own learning proved to be very engaging and powerful.
Procedure: (insist that your students follow these steps succinctly, checking carefully)
1. Make the word with magnetic letters.
2. Check the word left to right letter by letter.
3. Write the word.
4. Check the word again letter by letter.
5. Read the word.
6. Repeat the procedure 3 times for each word, adding a tally mark each time.
Time Saving Tip: put everything the child needs in a container: 1 dry erase marker/earaser, 1 dry erase board, 1 set of magnetic letters, and the student's list of words.
