This is a Word Study Notebook that I have made where your students have their own personal little word notebook every week. The routine will be the same every week, but the Phonics pattern will change each week. Each day the students have a certain activity to do to practice that particular foundational skill. This is a great independent activity for your students to do first thing in the morning or even during your Phonics time during your literacy block.
Day 1- Number of Letters Sort (Students will sort their words based on how many letters it has)
Day 2- Closed Sort (Sort the words based on the weekly pattern)
Day 3- Read the Room (Students will look around the room and find words to write in their notebook that match your weekly pattern. If they can't find any around the room, have them look in books.)
Day 4- Alphabetical Order (Students will put all 15 words in alphabetical order--This one takes a while for them to really master, but the more you practice with them the better they will get) This one takes a LOT of modeling.
Day 5- MEMORY DAY With a Friend (Students can find a friend to play memory with their words. When they play, they need to practicing reading the words when they pull them. The only way I let my students do this part is if the rest of the weeks activities are complete and it is NEAT.)
In this packet, you will find the Word Study Notebook itself which you need to print. Make sure you print the 2 pages where it is on 1 page back to back since you're making it into a book. You will also find the Word Sorting Mat which you can print and laminate and give one to each child to keep in their desk. It just helps them sort their words better. I have also included all the weeks of patterns that I do with my first graders. There are about 30 pages worth of word sort words.
