Make word study fun! Provide your students with a fun and interactive way to practice beginning sounds quickly, easily and fluently. These beginning sound picture sorts coincide with the letters taught and reviewed each week in the Reading Wonders kindergarten curriculum. Each letter is practiced over and over for repeated practice toward the ultimate goal of mastery.
Simply laminate each page, cut them out and place in a baggie labeled with the sort. Viola! You are ready to go!
They can be used in many different ways:
*for small group reading instruction
*in an interactive notebook
*as a literacy center
For small group instruction, I watch and assess how well they recognize the beginning sounds and where they are sorting the pictures; guiding and discussing as needed. It is also great for vocabulary discussion, especially with any second language learners! It is also great for use by a paraprofessional while they are working one-on-one or with small groups of your students as extra support.
For a literacy center, they take a baggie and practicing segmenting all of the sounds, determining the beginning sound and sorting the pictures on their own (or with a group). They can also draw the pictures/write the words after they have sorted them.
For an interactive spelling notebook, just print out the page for each of the desired students and have them cut, mix up and glue the pictures in the correct columns. COMING SOON: Black and white copies (although the color copies can easily be copied, black and white versions will use up less toner)!
