Are you looking for Word Study/Spelling lessons that correlate to the “Word Journeys” program by Kathy Ganske? If so, look no further! This is a complete lesson unit with activities for Feature H(Other Long Vowel Patterns) in the Within Word stage. This packet includes materials for Sorts 1-7 in this feature. (Sorts 8-15 will be posted under a separate listing). For each sort, there is a group/partner activity and an independent activity.

For each sort in the feature, you will get:
•A Teacher Guide (gives the general rule for the sort, the word sort answer key, the directions for the group activity, and the directions for the independent activity)
•Word Sort List for students (large copy for student manipulation, small copy for putting in notebook)
•Homework Assignment Sheet (optional—I have my students complete these activities for homework but you obviously could do something else)
•Group Activity Materials
•Word Study Sequence Chart (all 4 stages with different features)

If you are not familiar with this method for teaching spelling/word study, the lesson can be taught over four days (you could do it over five by having students do sorts using the word cards on one day).
•DAY 1: Introduce the word sort and give the students their word lists (the larger versions are used for physical sorting and the smaller words can be glued into a notebook).
•DAY 2: Students work in groups or with a partner to complete the group activity to practice the rule for this sort.
•DAY 3: Students work independently to practice the rule for this sort.
•DAY 4: Test the students on the words
