Using these word wall cards you can launch a complete Greek and Latin etymology study for FREE. Like a traditional word wall, simply introduce five word stems a week after including a personalized drawing from one of your students. Incorporate and reinforce mnemonic devices such as hand movements (e.g. hand crosses as an "X" for anti), for life-long retention.
Benefits include a better understanding of known and unknown words, increased spelling proficiency, and maximized vocabulary acquisition. In Essentials of Elementary Reading, Michael Graves, Susan Watts-Taffe, and Bonnie Graves estimate that students learn between 3,000 and 4,000 new words each year, with the typical student knowing some 25,000 words by the end of elementary school. One Greek word stem can open up vocabulary acquisition for hundreds of other words found while reading!
