Welcome to Read and Spell Well Sentence Walls
In class writing has never been easier or more fun for students!!! This program supports students as they begin their writing journey. Reluctant writers struggle to begin writing for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they cannot think of topics or ideas to write about. Some students have so many ideas, but are unable to spell each word that they want to put down. Word walls help students by providing banks of words for students to refer to, but so often the word that the students want is not there or they are unable to find it.
Sentence Walls teach children to create sentences. They provide many topic ideas, without telling the student what to write. They provide the spelling for common nouns and adjectives that are the typical beginning in most children’s writing.
-Expose students regularly to the sentence wall, that they have a huge bank of sentences with great topic variety and descriptive choice.
-Engage in repeated morning practice, so that children improve their writing skills and are able to write independently
-Support their writing process as they come to words that they do not know how to spell. Begin by checking the sentence walls and other tools in the classroom. If the word is not there, support them to sound the word out, even if it is not spelled correctly. This is hard for many students, but if practiced and modeled enough, children begin to enjoy writing without being stumped by words that are hard to spell. They then write more, use more resources to support their writing and quickly, their writing improves.
