**Fully editable!** MS Word format
This unit aligns with Lists 1-10 of the Word Within the Word vocabulary program created by Michael Clay Thompson and contains a total of 250 word stems. There are 25 sets of graphic organizers and 25 quizzes with answer keys. It is enough for an entire year of vocabulary study!
While I love the practicality of the content of the Word Within the Word materials, I found the lists and quizzes overwhelming and unmanageable for my sixth grade students. I decided to break the lists down into more manageable sections, creating sub-lists containing ten word stems each. I also devised graphic organizers to help students use a hands-on format to develop connections between these word stems and words they are already familiar with. Students choose two familiar words for each word stem and write notes, draw pictures, or write a sentence to solidify their connections.
I changed the quiz format and divided it into sections, grouping by fives and providing a word bank and clue words. I wanted to keep the repetition feature to increase proficiency through numerous exposures to the word parts, so each quiz (after the first two) covers the word stems from that list and the two previous lists, for a total of thirty word stems on each quiz.
Download the sample and try lesson 1A! Remember that this lesson only has 10 words on the quiz because that is all that students would have studied at that point.
