Product Description
Guided reading is an important part of your reading instruction. It is a tool used to explicitly teach and support small groups of students with their current level of reading in mind.

Many teachers do not include word work in their small group instruction, however it can be a beneficial component. By using simple, quick activities (typically 1-3 minutes) you can informally assess your students, work with a single student in the group, or introduce a new skill.

Word work is best implemented at the end of your time with each guided reading group. There are countless word work activities that you can use with your students. Included in this resource, you will find 30 activities that can be used with your students as they progress from level A to E (or about level 1 to 8).

What's Included?
- Leveled Skills and Activities Lists for levels A through E
- Activities at a Glance Guide
- Word Work Activity Cards (for the teacher)
- 30 Word Work Activities and Materials

What skills are covered?
1. letters
2. sight words
3. word patterns - CVC, CVCe
4. word endings - plurals
5. syllables - 1, 2, and 3 syllables
6. words - beginning sounds, ending sounds, onset and rime, changing sounds in words (initial, medial, and final), consonant clusters
7. rhyming

What grade level(s) is the Guided Reading Word Work appropriate for?
This resource will cover an entire year of guided reading word work for most kindergarten classrooms. The activities included will also work in other grade levels, especially first grade. However, if you have any students reading at a level A through E (or 1 through 8), this resource is for you! Even if you are in a higher grade level, the activities will work great for ESL and SPED students.

One thing you will notice about the Guided Reading Word Work, is that most of the skills and activities span across multiple reading levels. In fact, at least 10 activities for level E can be used with your level F readers.

What materials do I need?
Within this 660+ page resource, you will find almost everything you need to complete the activities. The only materials you absolutely need outside of what is provided are paper and writing utensils.

I highly suggest you print the word work materials included on card stock and laminate them for durability because they can be used for years!

How long does it take to prepare?
Looking at the page count, you may find this resource a little daunting. The initial set-up for your guided reading word work will take time. However, once you have prepped these 30 activities you will have enough word work to last the entire year for your A-E level readers!

By spending the time now, to prep this resource you will save yourself hours each week! Once you have printed and stored the activities you will be able to easily pull the materials you need each day or week and be ready to go!

I already have word work stations, why do I need this?
Most word work stations you already own, are probably meant for independent practice or have fun themes. The activities included in this resource were made for a guided reading setting and can be used all year long!

We don't use guided reading at my school. Can I still use this?
Yes! All the activities included would be great when working with RTI, ESL, and SPED students. You or a parent volunteer could also use the resources during tutoring sessions.

I have this and love it, but I want to reinforce these word work concepts during my students centers!
I’ve got you covered! I offer several themed and year-round word work materials and my monthly centers include word work activities as well.
