Thanks so much for viewing and considering my product! I appreciate your time.
This double-sided worksheet is what I use with my fourth grade class for their Word Work rotation during my Daily 3 (I do 3 rotations instead of the classic 5 rotation Daily 5).
For my class, I use “Words Their Way” for spelling. On Mondays, I meet with my spelling groups and they receive their word sort, which they cut into cards. During their Word Work rotation time for the week (~15 minutes per day), they work through the three tasks included in the worksheet. It usually takes 4 days for students to complete all 3 tasks.
TASK 1: Students sort out their word cards. Then, they record their sort on their sheet. This can be done independently or in pairs. It helps students practice spelling their words, and reinforces the pattern the student is working on that week.
TASK 2: This activity must be done in pairs. One student writes out the headings of their word pattern (maybe they’re learning prefixes, so their headings might be pre-, un-, and dis-). Another student reads off the spelling words. The word “predictable” would be put in the “pre-” category. This AGAIN reinforces the students’ pattern and helps the student practice spelling the words. Once finished, the student checks his/her work and sees which words are misspelled and need to be practiced.
TASK 3: Students use a book of their choice to see if they can find more words that would fit in their sort! Following from the example above working with prefixes, the student would look for and record words they find beginning with pre-, un-, and dis-.
My fourth graders are always engaged during these activities. Once the routine is taught, they need no reminders! Let me know what you think.
