This game is great for a word work center! It focuses on short a, short i, and short o. The cards may be changed out to follow the letter you are focusing on during that time.
This file include three pages. Each page contains three cards which focus on one vowel sound - short a, short i, and short o. Print out the cards and cut them each out. You will need clothespins to go along with the cards. I label each clothespin with one letter for the word. For example, If the word is pot, I put one letter on each clothespin (you will need three). Use the cards as a guide to make your clothespins (there are three words already listed on the cards). The last word is a mystery word that you may choose yourself. Make a set of clothespins for this word also.
I place all of the clothespins in a bag along with the card. The students come and pull a bag and take it back to their desk. Then, the students build each word by clipping the clothespins onto the side of the card. When they have clipped them all, they will have one set of clothespins left, and will need to figure out the mystery word!
I also have my students write a sentence using each word once they have figured it out. :)
