(Word Games focusing on the LONG VOWEL SOUNDS A, E, I, O, and U; TH/SH SOUNDS)
These enjoyable word games will help to keep your students engaged while practicing their reading and phonics skills. This download includes 6 game boards and a set of playing cards for each game. The game boards and cards focus on LONG A, LONG E, LONG I, LONG O, LONG U, and the TH/SH SOUNDS. There is also a set of Special Cards that will make the game a bit more unpredictable and fun: SKIP A TURN and SWITCH COLORS WITH THE OTHER PLAYER!
Preparation: Print the game boards, Special Cards, and 2 copies of the word cards per game. Laminate the word cards for durability (optional) and cut apart. [Note: There is a symbol (circle, square, oval, etc.) on each set of word cards as well as on the game board and Special Cards. This will help to keep the kids organized in the event that the game cards get mixed together.]
How to Play:
Player 1 turns over a word card and reads it. If the word is read correctly, the player colors the matching word on the game board. If read incorrectly, the player loses that turn. Player 2 continues in the same manner, using a different colored crayon to color his/her word. But...Watch out for the Special Cards! They can change everything! Play continues until all of the words are filled in. The player with the most gumdrops colored in at the end of the game is the winner!
Store the cards in baggies or plastic soap boxes (I found mine at the Dollar Store!) and place them in a tub or basket... and use again and again in your literacy center!
You may also choose to laminate the game boards (or use sheet protectors) and use bingo/counting chips to cover the gumdrops instead of coloring them. Or.... laminate the game boards and use dry erase markers.
You may also want to make several copies of the word cards and use them as flashcards or use them to play Concentration. Or...You may also have the kiddos use the cards and arrange them in ABC order.
