The concept of exemplar words is similar to that of word families. These words serve as anchors for students both in reading and in writing. There are some ‘chunks’ that children learning to read in Spanish should learn to recognize quickly. Exemplar words should be learned and used to read and write other words with difficult consonants, consonant clusters, diphthongs, unusual chunks, endings, and suffixes. Any of the following Spanish exemplar words are appropriate for readers at DRA levels 6-28.
To use this word sort, cut out and laminate each caterpillar and the colored word circles that go with it. Give a student two different caterpillars (i.e. bebé and donde, que and aqui, or baile and hay) and the words that go with those two caterpillars. Have students sort the words according to the pattern or ‘chunk’ that they have in common with the exemplar word. The recording sheet can be used after sorting.
