Included: 49 Cat Card Pages to Analyze
This FUN On the Way Game uses a Gifted Strategy, Compare and Contrast, to help build strong thinkers. Each cat card has 3 words printed on it. Students must analyze the 3 words in search of a way to tie two words together while proving that one of the words does not fit. Students must be able to defend their thinking verbally. This process strengthens the English Language Arts Standard for Speaking and Listening.
Students will compare/contrast the 3 words and develop their conclusion, but another student might be able to prove another way to organize the words. Both choices could be correct as long as the students can prove their choice and justify their answer. Many cards are set up just that way, so students aren't just looking for one right answer, they are looking for opportunities to share their thinking.
This FUN activity could be used during a whole group lesson, with small group instruction, with a partner, or at a literacy center. The cards could be projected on a screen or printed and held. I print mine so students can use independently.
The teacher can also use the responses as an informal assessment, who can and can't talk about how the words are alike and different. The responses can help the teacher know how to help each child build their phonics awareness.
The cards have opportunities for students to notice the following:
Glued Together Sounds
R Controlled Vowels
These cat cards are presented slowly in FUN On the Way Units. This product has all the cat cards in one spot in case you are not purchasing the units. If you are purchasing all the units then you do not need this game.
