How long can you make the wiggly word worm? In this activity, students gain confidence decoding CVC (and some CCVC words) from the -ill, -in, -ip and/or -ick word families as they work to increase the length of the wiggly word worm.
Use word worms for individual or small group practice or as an “I have..., who has...” activity.
To use for individual or small group practice:
Students read the words and sort them according to the word family (rime) identified on the ‘head’ card of each word worm. Students practice decoding skills as they match pictures to the words they’ve read in order to ‘grow’ the wiggly word worm.
To use as an “I have..., who has...” activity:
Keep the ‘head’ cards separate from the body-section cards. Share the body-section cards amongst the students. Select a ‘head’ card and start off the activity by saying, eg. “I’ve got the first [-ip] card, who has [lip]...”. The student with the matching picture adds his card to the worm and then decodes the word now appearing at the end of the worm. He then says “I have [lip], who has [rip]?” The activity continues in this way until a worm is completed. The student who completes a worm can select a new ‘head’ card and the activity continues until all the worms are complete.

This pack focuses on the following CVC and CCVC words from these short vowel word families:
1. -ill : bill, fill, hill, pill, spill, drill
2. -in : bin, fin, pin, win, chin, thin, spin
3. -ip : dip, lip, pip, rip, ship, skip, slip
4. -ick : kick, lick, pick, sick, chick, flick, stick
To prepare for activity:
Print onto cardstock, laminate for durability, and cut along solid and dotted black lines.
This is a stand-alone pack for the -ill, -in, -ip and -ick word families; however, the word worms from this pack can also be used alongside word worms from other word families.
