This “Word of the Day File Folder” for describing pictures of common objects is an interactive way to learn vocabulary.
Included are 120 real photos of objects from 10 different categories. Students identify photos by category, color and size (feature), what the object does or what you do with it (function), and where you would typically find the object. You can add this folder to your Morning Group or Morning Meeting for daily vocabulary practice, or use it during Speech Therapy sessions.
Each student can use their own file folder, or the teacher can use a single folder with the whole class. Students will choose the color-coded pictures from the left side of the folder to answer the questions on the right side of the folder to describe the word of the day. (Visuals are included with questions.)
This type of vocabulary instruction incorporates the use of core words to describe objects. This technique is beneficial for early communicators and students who use AAC devices. Students with devices can practice finding core words while completing this file folder activity.
This task can be differentiated easily by minimizing the field size of pictures to choose from to answer the questions.
2 Color coded sentence strip prompts are provided to for students to expand utterances. “It is a [size] [color] [category].” and “A [photo] is a [size] [color] [category].” Ex. “It is a big brown animal.” Or “A horse is a big brown animal.”
Categories included: food, clothing, animals, sports, transportation, furniture, appliances, tools, plants, and toys
