I use this to introduce academic vocabulary! I pick a word and we do something with the word every day while covering a variety of other skills.
Monday: Dictionary work!
Dictionary definition, guide words, parts of speech, syllable count and practice writing the word 3 times each. After Christmas I have the students write the words neatly in cursive.
Tuesday: Work on synonyms & antonyms for the W.O.W word.
Wednesday: They use the sentence in context and identify what type of sentence they wrote. They can draw a symbol to help remember the W.O.W word or draw a picture for their sentence.
Thursday: By Thursday they know the meaning of the word and they can write a definition in their own words.
Friday: They rate their understanding of the word and tell me how they might use this word in reading and in math.
I use Larry Bell’s 12 power words, academic vocabulary that I feel my kids need help with and I pull from the Tier 2 words.
