Wordly Wise Vocabulary Picture Reference Cards!
This set of cards can be used with Wordly Wise Book 3 Lesson 1, and the associated story "Monsters of the Deep". While there are numerous Wordly Wise resources available, these cards are meant to assist students who have language-based learning differences, have particular difficulty learning new vocabulary, or are English Language Learners.
These students may have not yet mastered the underlying language skills that contribute to learning vocabulary, including:
• identifying and recognizing parts of speech (verbs, nouns, adjectives);
• recognizing spelling patterns for correct pronunciation and decoding;
• identifying word meanings based on context.
The design of these vocabulary cards is intended to scaffold and improve these developing language skills while making it easier to learn vocabulary.
Many children, especially those who are visual learners, benefit from picture cues. The cards are designed to be printed double-sided and used as flashcards. When reviewing as flash cards, children should identify what connects the picture to the word. When they review the card again, they will use the picture as a hook to remember the word. Unsurprisingly, this is easiest for concrete nouns. Recognizing verbs, adjectives, and abstract nouns is more difficult when looking at concrete pictures.
All cards are color coded, based on their respective basic parts of speech. Nouns are blue, verbs are red, and adjectives are green. While this reveals the part of speech rather than prompting students to figure it out, it allows them to focus more attention on the meaning of the word. For words that have a different meaning depending on which part of speech they are, more than one card is included. For example, the noun coast (with a picture of the sea coast) will have the word printed in blue. A separate card, printed in red, depicts the verb to coast (as on a bicycle). Please note: I have omitted parts of speech word forms when they are not introduced in the Wordly Wise lesson.
To assist children who may otherwise get stuck on pronunciation, accented syllables of each word are printed in bold and syllable breaks are indicated.
While this product is intended to be used with the Wordly Wise 3000 language series, I am not associated with EPS School Specialty. These cards use a variety of photographs, line drawings and clipart, and I have taken great care to ensure that all images used are either public domain or are licensed openly for reuse and modification.
