Students will analyze diction, tone, mood and theme from the poem, "Words Free as Confetti," by Pat Mora. The final product will be a graphic organizer where they have recorded diction words and completed statements about tone, mood and theme. They will also write a paragraph, using details from the text, to support an explanation of the author's purpose for writing. I always guide my students through this activity with heavy scaffolding. Depending on the students, after one guided lesson, they can usually do this analysis independently using another text or new chapters from the same text. It becomes something meaningful you can leave for a sub once your students understand it and can do it alone. I also use this graphic organizer/text analysis with short stories and poems.
