The Words Their Way program encourages differentiating word study based on a student's understanding of spelling patterns, but assessing students on multiple lists in a limited amount of time can be challenging. The assessments included in this item make differentiating for word study much more manageable. The assessments measure students' knowledge of a spelling pattern in the context of a sentence. Each spelling word is used in a sentence and is either spelled correctly or incorrectly. The student's task is to identify the misspelled words and spell them correctly. Around half of the words are spelled incorrectly on any given assessment. I find this to be a much more authentic and realistic assessment of their spelling skills. THIS SET OF ASSESSMENTS MATCHES THE 2009 EDITION OF WORDS THEIR WAY.
This style of assessment applies spelling skills in a much more real-world style. Students aren't writing words in isolation like they do with a traditional spelling test, but instead are looking for spelling errors is if they were editing a paper they had written. My students are able to complete these assessments in around 15 minutes, allowing me time to complete other learning tasks.
There are blanks provided for students to write the corrected spelling word right on the page, and answer keys for all spelling assessments are included. This makes it easy for you, an aide, or even a parent volunteer to correct the assessments.
I have also included printable spelling lists for each of the lessons. There are two lists per page to save on paper. I have students keep this list to refer to throughout the week as they complete tasks from a spelling menu and for use as a study tool.
This item includes an assessment, word list, and answer key for lessons 13-50 of the Within Word, lessons 1-55 of the Syllable Affix, and lessons 1-60 of the Derivational level of the Words Their Way program.
[Note: There is no assessment for Within Word list 44, as the word list does not lend itself to this type of assessment. Also, Within word lists 1- 12 are picture cues, which don't lend themselves to this type of assessment either.]
