Words Their Way Launch Plan and Homework Activities
When starting Words Their Way with my class, I start by building the correct procedures and routines so that it will run smoothly. I have used this plan with third grade.
1. The launch plan (overview below). This is the plan I follow to launch Words Their Way to my students. It takes about 15-20 minutes a day. I spend about the first two weeks doing these lessons while I’m grading the spelling inventory and figuring out my spelling groups.
2. Tic Tac Toe Activity Sheet. This can be used for homework or in class work. I have included quality student examples of these activities.
Overview of Plan:
Day 1 Objective: Assess students on their spelling skills.
Day 2 Objective: Activate students’ background knowledge on sorting and categories.
Day 3 Objective: Introduce a Words Their Way sort.
Day 4 Objective: Review sorting and cutting a Words Their Way sort. Learn and practice recording sort on lined paper. (Student examples included.)
Day 5 Objective: Learn and practice sorting activity Speed Sort.
