I created this choice menu to use with my students' Words Their Way lists because I wanted their word study to be more than simply memorizing spelling patterns. There are 3 categories of tasks on this choice menu:
The Word Pattern tasks incorporate the application and analysis of the pattern to other words beyond the word list, while the Vocabulary tasks require students to demonstrate an understanding of the word meaning. The Spelling tasks are traditional tasks that reinforce the word study. I used this choice menu as homework for each word list, but it could also be used in a Literacy Station.
I have listed Level D as correlating with an on-level 4th grade student. However, I had students in my classroom working at various levels based on their word-study placement data. Level D could be used by a range of grade levels, depending on acceleration or remediation needs.
