Words Their Way Word Sort Recording Sheets for Within Word Pattern Spellers (Yellow Book)
Sorts 1-50, with bonus sentence, spelling inventory, blank sort, assessment & glue pages included!
Instructions (Page 2-3):
Sentence Sheets (Pages 4-9): 3 Different versions of sentence sheets are included for you to choose from based on the levels of your students. I usually have my students write their words in sentences on the 3rd day of their word study for each sort. (I'm currently doing a 2 week cycle.)
Spelling Inventory Sheets (Pages 10-15): There are 3 different inventory sheets to choose from depending on the level of your students. In kindergarten, I used the 1-10 (with 11-20 on the back) half sheet (cut in half with a paper cutter) at the beginning of the year because it is all too overwhelming for some students to try and write 10 words. As your students progress, you can use the 1-31 page (back and front). For 2nd grade, I use the dotted 1-31 page at the beginning of the year and the 1-31 lined pages at the end of the year. On the 1-31 pages, I have included a scoring line for each of the three types of inventories.
Sort Recording Pages & Assessment Sheets(Pages 16-133): When I used Words Their Way with my kindergarten students, I found it necessary to use these pages for the Letter Name - Alphabetic Spellers book. I asked my students to write their words on the 2nd or 3rd day of the sort study. I found the sort pages assisted with organization and understanding. Since I found them so helpful, I decided to make them for my 2nd graders, as well for the Within Word Pattern book. It has just been very convenient and there is no ambiguity of what to do on their assignment.
There are extra lines so your students can add words that fit the sort. I find this helpful in getting students to really think about their words and expand on what the sort can include.
For the red book, I had included boxes for drawings if they fit on the page. I did not have room on this set, but I still have my students draw a little picture to the side so they can associate the word with a meaning.
A few sorts have more than one sort sheet and more than one assessment and that is identified at the top with the sort number and a letter (ex: 24A and 24B).
Finally, if you have your students do “open” sorts where they choose how to sort their cards, I have included blank sort pages at the very end for 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-Way sorts. This will also help you see your students’ thought processes.
Blank Sort (Pages 134-137): Sort pages for 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-Way sorts
Glue Pages (Pages 138-140): If you have your students glue their words at the end of the week as an assessment, these are perfect to use - no more folding paper or having the kids draw wiggly lines! Glue pages for 2-, 3-, and 4-way sorts. For 5-way, I use both the 2- and 3-Way pages.
Blank Assessment pages (Pages 141-144): Assessment pages for your students to write down words that fit their sort pattern and put some of those words in sentences.
