This is a great tool for setting up your "Words Their Way" self-paced spelling program.
This would also work for any word family spelling program that includes word sorts.
It is designed as a reference for students to remind them of the activities that they are permitted and required to complete throughout each week of Word study. Each activity much be explicitly taught for most effective word study practice.
It is a word document therefore can easily be modified.
Using Words Their Way Spelling Program in my 4th grade classroom was at first difficult to start. I have learned through the start up experience that the program is both effective and can run itself. All of my students have improved dramatically and low readers have benefited from the program as well, they have improved reading scores.
This is the directions document that I have students tape to the inside cover of their spelling spirals. Then entire weekly spelling work and end of the week test is done in the spiral. Students get the word sort words on Monday, then, throughout the week they complete four activities. On Fridays they take their tests and hand in their spirals.
I have seven spelling groups in each of my 4th grade classes. These directions have really helped keep both parents and students aware of my expectations and the format for completing the activities.
I believe that Words Their Way is an incredible spelling program and my reading scores are proof that it is working beyond just spelling.
By setting up your Words Their Way spelling program with the directions I have created your spelling program becomes self-paced and works well for independent work time. I meet with spelling groups. The other students work independently or in pairs on spelling activities while I meet with groups.
Hopefully this set up will work well for you. I have revised it over eight times in the course of the past six months of using the program. I am submitting it as a Word document for those of you who would like to make changes.
Note - in general our word study week looks like this: Monday, meet with groups and students complete their word sorts. Tuesday students write sentences and work with the words. Weds. Complete a 3rd activity and practice "Speed sorts." Thursday blind sorts and Friday assessment.
Remember to model each of the activities and discuss each of the optional activities. I print the PDF file 2 pages per sheet. I handout the first page and teach how to do the activities then later handout the second sheet.
