[NO PRINT & NO PREP / Telepractice & In-Person]
This versatile PowerPoint is true exemplar of a CLINICAL TARGET MASH-UP: It is hard to choose a core target area, as there are so many directions you can go with this PowerPoint!
The presentation is simple; slides switch back and forth between fields of two related items (i.e. toothpaste and toothbrush) with written prompts to “Tell me how these go together” and “Show me how you use these together”, respectively. This provides excellent opportunities for expressive language targets (e.g. identifying common objects, explaining word associations, generating additional related vocabulary, etc).
If you look beyond “face value” we see excellent opportunities to target functional 2+ step directions involving pretend play and motor movement. We know that when we get students actively engaged and moving (“hands on”!) we can boost their learning. Following directions can be targeted receptively by prompting students to “act out” oral directions in sequential order (i.e. “FIRST put the toothpaste on the toothbrush and THEN brush your teeth”. Flip it around and have students practice using expressive language sequentially to take YOU through the steps involved in completing these functional tasks!
We have a feeling these ideas are just the tip of the iceberg, so we look forward to hearing your clinical angle!
